Student Activists Jailed
A court in Mayangone Township, Yangon jailed five student activists for defaming the Myanmar army or Tatmadaw during Thingyan or Water Festival in April, 2019.
A judge in Yangon court found student activists, 4 male and 1 female, guilty of defamation, sentencing them to one year imprisonment with labor.
Zay Yar Lwin, Paing Ye Thu, Paing Phyo Min, Zaw Linn Htut and Kay Khine Htun took part in a traditional satire performance in the Water Festival in which they are being accused of criticizing the military. They were arrested in April, 2019 with the violation of 505 (A), which is notorious for a broad range of accusations including defamation.
They are members of a group known as “Peacock Generations” and likely to face similar charges in Bota Taung Township, Yangon Region and Mau Bin Township in Ayeyarwaddy Region. (Photo: Kyaw Zaw Win/The Horizon Plus)
